These warnings are issued at temperatures where cold and wind chill pose an increased health risk.

Symptoms to look out for when temperatures drop this low are Shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and discoloration in fingers and toes.

Environment Canada also says people are at risk young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people who work or play sports outdoors, and people without adequate housing.

According to Homeward Trust Edmonton, as of December 2022, 2,769 people are homeless in the city today, and it’s cold snaps like these that can prove dangerous for those living outdoors. Think about it today or maybe consider making a donation to one of Edmonton’s local charities – Boyle Street, bissell center, Mustard Seed and the Salvation Army – who may need supplies during these times.
