Canadian curling tandem Jennifer Armstrong and Brayden Stewart pulled off a notable upset at Friday’s Mixed Doubles Super Series in Brantford, Ontario.

The Regina duo defeated world No. 2 mixed doubles Daniela Rupp and Kevin Wunderlin of Switzerland in a 10-8 finish on day two of the event.

Armstrong and Stewart scored four unanswered points in their last two finals to secure an upset win over the Swiss team, who suffered a 10-3 loss to Marie Kaldvee and Harri Lill of Estonia on Thursday but came away with one on Friday 8-4 win recovered Lindsey Schmalz and Damien Villard from Cambridge, Ont.

The marquee win came after coming from a narrow 7-6 deficit against another Swiss pair – and world No. 1s – Jenny Perret and Martin Rios earlier in the day.

Jennifer Jones and Brent Laing of Barrie, Ontario continued their momentum from day one with an 8-7 win over Kaldvee and Lill in the sixth draw.

Saskatoon’s Nancy Martin and Tyrel Griffith, world No. 3, suffered back-to-back defeats on Friday as the Scotland team of Jennifer Dodds and Bruce Mouat clinched a surprise 7-6 comeback win ahead of the father-daughter duo in the early draw Jaelyn and scored Jim Cotter of Vernon, BC would defeat her 7-4 in the later draw.

Cotter and Cotter’s team would also add a 6-5 result against Lauren and Greg Cheal of Lennoxville, Que., in the fourth draw.

The Cheal team later found themselves on the wrong end of an 11-6 loss in front of the brooms of Schmalz and Villard.

Kimberly and Wayne Tuck of Strathroy, Ontario recorded two wins and one loss on the day, led by a 6-4 win over Toronto’s Lisa Weagle and John Epping in the sixth draw.

Weagle and Epping’s team was defeated 8-5 by Sault Ste’s Kira Brunton and Brad Jacobs. Marie, Ontario, who also led the Unionville, Ontario duo of Lauren Wasylkiw and Joey Rettinger.
