Edward (Ted) Michael Tatem
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ted Tatem. He died on Tuesday December 13, 2022 at the age of 74. After more than four years of battling dementia, Ted is now free of his grip and at peace at last.
Ted will be remembered fondly as a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who loved his family to the fullest. Ted is survived by his loving wife Maureen and their three sons; Mark (Maria), Colin (Ruby) and Scott (Kristy) and his four special grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ted is also survived by his sister Marilyn (Gary). Ted was always a family man and he was proud and supportive of his sons and grandchildren.
Although born in Medicine Hat, Ab., he was raised in Tilley, Ab. Farming, hunting, and hockey were his younger loves, but they came second to the true love of his life — Maureen, his high school sweetheart. They shared over 98 adventurous years together. Maureen was his rock, his partner, his best friend and ultimately his biggest advocate!
As a man of faith, Ted was determined that Okotoks should have a Catholic school system. He was one of the instruments in the formation of Christ the Redeemer’s separate school system. Ted became the first chairman of the original school board.
Ted continued to love hockey and joined the Okotoks Spoilers. It was known as the “Tiger Ted” #2 jersey. He even has his own official Okotoks Spoilers 1992 Trader Cards. In the warmer months, Ted loved golfing adventures with the spoiler group.
Ted loved sailing, something he must have inherited from his father. After several years of sailing up and down the west coast of BC with grandchildren and friends, he finally realized his dream of sailing to Mexico. That included Maureen, of course. “Tarry-A-Bit” was their sailing ship that brought them many adventures along the coast of Mexico. They also traveled inland throughout Mexico.
Lifelong friendships developed from his hockey, golf and sailing days.
As an agrologist, he was responsible for Safe and Ted’s wastewater and biosolids disposal for both the City of Cranbrook and the City of Calgary
sustainable land use for farmers. Ted seemed to enjoy working with landowners and landowners the most.
Thank you to the caring staff at Bethany Riverview, especially Stephanie and Chris. I’m sure they have a lot of stories about Ted.
Special thanks also to Palliative Care at Rocky View Hospital, Unit 73. They were very supportive of Ted at the end of his life.
In the spirit of Christmas, the family asked for donations for a plaque or a Christmas basket for a family in need or a homeless shelter. Ted would have appreciated that.
