Wages And Number Of People Getting Canada Jobs Climbed In November
The latest data from Statistics Canada shows wages and the number of people landing paid jobs in Canada rose last November.
In its Payroll Employment, Earnings and Hours, and Job Vacancies report, November 2022, the Agency for Statistical and Demographic Services reveals that wages rose 4.2 percent year-on-year this month and an additional 7,100 people in Canada had paid jobs have found.
In the service sector, 13,500 more people found a job in November last year.

“Increases were seen in 10 of the 15 sectors, led by professional, scientific and technical services, government, and finance and insurance, while retail declined,” reports Statistics Canada.
There were hardly any changes in the manufacturing industry, although the construction industry gained 4,300 jobs.
Gains in professional and technical services were largely driven by growth in computer design and related services companies.
“In November 2022, the number of people employed in this industry had increased by 118,400, or 44.9 percent, compared to June 2020,” reports Statistics Canada. “This increase accounted for almost 42 percent of the overall growth in professional, scientific and technical services over the period.”
Construction employment gains were led by infrastructure projects, a housing boom and specialist builders.
“Construction payrolls rose for the third straight month in November, bringing total increases by 2.1 percent to 23,500 since September 2022,” notes Statistics Canada.
“Quebec and Alberta saw the largest increases in employment, while Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia saw modest declines.”
The average weekly wage in Canada rose to $1,180 in November last year
As employers tried to fill vacancies, they also increased the compensation paid to workers, raising average weekly earnings in Canada to $1,180 in November.
“Increases were recorded in all provinces, with the largest proportional increases in Newfoundland and Labrador and New Brunswick,” notes Statistics Canada.
“Overall gains in average weekly earnings were moderated slightly by slower growth in Saskatchewan and Ontario.”
Compared to the previous year, the average weekly earnings in the manufacturing sector had risen by 5.3 percent up to November last year.

“Profits in manufacturing and mining, quarrying and oil and gas exploration have been dampened by slower growth in construction,” notes Statistics Canada.
As of November, 850,300 jobs remained unfilled due to a shortage of workers begging to be filled amid the country’s labor shortage crisis.
That’s down from the May 2022 peak of more than a million job openings, but still a very tight job market in Canada.
“For every vacancy there was 1.2 jobless in November 2022, virtually unchanged from August but up slightly from the low of one in June,” notes Statistics Canada. “Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the unemployment to job vacancy ratio was about 2.2 from January 2019 to February 2020.”
Foreigners can move to Canada through many economic immigration programs
Foreign nationals hoping to gain permanent residency in Canada can take advantage of the opportunities this tight labor market offers to immigrate through the country’s many economic immigration programs.
Under the Express Entry system, immigrants can apply for permanent residency online if they meet the eligibility criteria for one of three federal immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST), and the Canada Experience Class Program ( CEC) or a participating provincial immigration program.
The candidates’ profiles are then compared using a points-based system called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The highest ranking candidates will be considered for an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency. Those who receive an ITA must quickly complete an application and pay processing fees within 90 days.
Through a network of Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP), nearly all ten Canadian provinces and three territories can also nominate qualified workforce candidates for admission to Canada if they have the specific skills required by the local economy. Successful candidates who receive a provincial or territorial nomination can then apply to federal immigration authorities for permanent residency in Canada.
Canadian employers can also recruit and hire foreigners through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) and the International Mobility Program (IMP).
The Global Talent Stream (GTS), part of the TFWP, can result in Canadian work permits and visa processing within two weeks under normal processing situations.
