Physicians to Damar Hamlin: ‘You won the game of life’

When Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin woke up Wednesday night after suffering cardiac arrest on Monday against the Cincinnati Bengals, his first question to the University of Cincinnati doctors was, “Did we win?”
Play was suspended and hasn’t resumed since, but there was a clear winner for the Doctors.
“Yes, Damar, you won. You won the game of life,” said Dr. Timothy Pritts on Thursday, paraphrasing one of his associates.
Hamlin cannot speak because of a breathing tube down his throat, but communicates in writing.
dr Pritts said he’s made a “substantial improvement” in the last 24 hours and called it “a really good turning point in his ongoing treatment” since the 24-year-old’s sudden collapse after a routine punch shook the sporting world.
Bills’ Hamlin has seen a “significant improvement” in the condition over the past 24 hours and called it “a really good turning point in his ongoing care” since the 24-year-old’s sudden collapse after a routine hit rocked the sporting world.
Aside from improvements, Dr. Pritts that Hamlin appears to be “intellectually intact” – something his awareness continues to indicate when asking specific questions.
“The first question he wrote when he woke up was, ‘Did we win?’ so not only are the lights on, he’s home,” said Dr. pritts “Seems all cylinders are firing in his brain.”
Hamlin remains in intensive care and has yet to make significant progress, said Dr. pritts
dr William Knight, who alongside Dr. Pitts credited what he called a “textbook” medical response by Bill’s staff with saving Hamlin’s life.
In the days since Hamlin’s on-field cardiac arrest, people across the United States and beyond have responded with a flurry of prayers on social media and donations to his Chasing M’s Foundation, a community toy drive with an original goal of $2,500 his support gathered has raised more than $7 million.
“[Hamlin]expressed surprise that he hadn’t been born for two days,” said Dr. Pritts, “we spoke to him about all the support that has been given to him and his family from Cincinnati, Buffalo and really across the country during this time.”
With the news of his improved condition and his victory in the Game of Life, the shock continued on social media with heartwarming messages.

So inspired to hear the story of Damar Hamlin, who was able to communicate in writing and wrote to the doctors, “Did we win?”
And they respond with, “Yes, you won the game of life.”
Man, it touches my soul that now, while he’s recovering, he’s feeling all the love and mana that was sent to him. ❤️💪🏾

#Bills S. Damar Hamlin opened his eyes last night and reacted. Truly unbelievable. One thing is very clear from conversations with his loved ones: they are infinitely grateful for the medical care Hamlin received immediately on the field and then over the past 72 hours.
