A wildfire evacuation alert for some Fort McMurray residents has been updated to a two-hour evacuation notice.

Residents living in Prairie Creek, Abasand, Grayling Terrace and Beacon Hill should be prepared to leave within two hours if ordered, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) announced on Tuesday.

Officials say the fire, MWF-017, has grown closer to the city, and winds on Tuesday are expected to bring flames even closer throughout the day.

“The closest point of the fire is about 13.5 km from the Fort McMurray landfill. The wildfire is about 13 km from the intersection of highways 63 and 881,” RMWB said in the Tuesday update.

Highway 63 remains open, but officials said the province and RCMP would be monitoring the proximity of the wildfire to the highway and would communicate any changes.

Alberta Wildfire is expected to provide an update on MWF-017 at 2:30 p.m. MT.
