Tampa Bay nearly doubled its lead at 9:32 when Daniil Tarasov robbed Nikita Kucherov, who should have scored from the right circle on Tampa’s power play on an open night.

The Jackets nearly leveled the game at 12:49 on the power play when Kirill Marchenko defeated Erik Cernak and drove into the net, but was narrowly denied by Brian Elliott.

Anthony Cirelli nearly doubled the Lightning lead after dancing around Erik Gudbranson on a shot at the net, but was hooked by Tim Berni, who missed his backhand attempt at 13:44.

The Lightning went 1-0 up at the first break along with a 12-6 edge on shots on target.

2nd period

Marchenko leveled the game at 3:10 when he fired a wrist shot from the left circle past Elliott’s other side after receiving a cross-ice feed from Cole Sillinger.

Steven Stamkos had a solid scoring opportunity at 12:48 after a break away from Nick Paul was thwarted by Vladislav Gavrikov and Tarasov but was thwarted by Tarasov’s glove from the left circle.

With Tampa Bay on the power play late in the third, Tarasov made saves at 18:25, 18:35, and 18:48 to tie the game.

Teams went into the third half with a tie, with the Lightning holding a 20-17 lead on shots on goal.

3rd period

Johnny Gaudreau had a chance to put the Jackets ahead at 2:29 on a drive into the net but fired a backhand shot from just over the bar.

Brayden Point put the Lightning ahead at 9:02 after Brandon Hagel’s pass to Point deflected off the right wing to Marcus Bjork’s left front door off Tarasov’s pads and Point was there to score.

Hagel extended the Bolts’ lead with a wrist shot from the right slot after the Blue Jackets dropped a giveaway in the neutral zone at 1:36 p.m.

Hagel scored again, this time without a goal to make it 17:19, driving the nail in the coffin.

The Jackets fell 4-1 and are down 10-17-2 on the season.
