A couple of up-and-coming Big East squads will go head-to-head on CBS on Saturday when Creighton hosts No. 13 Xavier in a Jan. 11 reboot of a thriller in which the Musketeers claimed a crucial 90-87 victory. That loss dropped the Bluejays to 3-3 in the Big East game, but they’ve since recovered well, winning their last three games to go 12-8 (6-3 Big East) in the second meeting and the fourth place in the league standings.

Xavier starts the day alone with 17:4 (9:1) and an 82:79 win in 19th place at UConn on Wednesday. The Musketeers were one of the best surprise teams in the nation in the first season of Coach Sean Miller’s second stint as head of the program.

With a win over Creighton, Xavier would reach 10 conference wins for the first time since the 2017-18 season, with several weeks left in the regular season. While Miller inherited some high-profile veterans from last season’s roster, he also added a key transfer in Souley Boum. The former UTEP guard scored 26 points in their first encounter with Creighton and led the Musketeers by 21 points in this week’s win over UConn.

All five Creighton starters reached double digits in the first meeting, led by Baylor Scheierman’s 25. Even scoring was a hallmark for the Bluejays, who again received double-digit scoring contributions from each starter in a 104-76 win over St. John’s Wednesday.

The Musketeers used a 15-7 advantage in second chance points and a 17-3 advantage in bank points to claim a win in the first meeting after trailing with just 9:20 six minutes remaining. But that game was at Xavier’s, and the Bluejays have only lost once at home this season. A Creighton win would not only be a rematch, it would also put the Bluejays firmly in the league title race.
