Methuen pins down MVC wrestling title

Undefeated Methuen (30-0) secured the Merrimack Valley Conference title with a 39-33 win over Chelmsford. Antonio Rios, Dom Gangi, Joe Tavares, Anthony DeMaio, Vincent Jimenez, Noah Beshara, Vinnie DeMaio and Joe Bolduc all earned wins for the Rangers.

St. John’s Prep (32-1) defeated Catholic Memorial 72-6 to win their 25th straight Catholic Conference title. Ben Schumacher, Alex Schaeublin, Braedon Goes, Elias Hajali, Jimmy Lally, Jayden D’Ambrosio, Ryan DeSouza, Ryan Lepore, Rawson Iwanicki, Vince Bilott, Rani Haddad, Marc Pineiro and Alex Bajoras all grabbed wins for the Eagles, who have won 114 league games in a row.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Outside of the league, coach Matt Poirier notched his 350th career win while Michael Porter had 18 points as Scituate (11-4) defeated Southeastern 61-55 in overtime.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

At the Mayflower Athletic Conference, Leah Sylvain topped the stats list with 15 points, four assists and six steals 4 as Westport defeated Bishop Connolly 49-14.

In a non-league contest, Bridget Simmons finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds to lead Arlington Catholic past Lowell Catholic 33-24. …

Sophomore Ava Orlando stopped 26 points as Notre Dame of Hingham upended Canton 47-29.

BOYS HOCKEY

Jay Carter and Noah Thorpe each scored two goals and CJ Bailey made 32 saves as Concord-Carlisle defeated Boston Latin 4-0 in an MVC/DCL match.

In a non-league game, Nick D’Olympio scored twice as the Catholic Memorial beat St. John’s (S) 6-1.

GIRL HOCKEY

In a Cape and Islands competition, Elle Mone and Esme Colon provided goals while Maia Donnelly scored the winner in overtime and Martha’s Vineyard put Barnstable 3-2 past Barnstable.

Rory Shields scored twice as Archbishop Williams defeated Catholic Central League opponents Matignon 4-0.

RUGBY

St. John’s Prep have appointed Tom Clark as their new varsity rugby coach. A native of the Youngstown, Ohio area, the 52-year-old will now oversee a program that won back-to-back state titles in 2010 and 2011. He has been an assistant to prep since 2012.

“Anyone who has coached alongside me can attest to my commitment to helping young people reach their full potential both in rugby and in life,” said Clark. “I believe it is extremely important to make a lasting and meaningful impression on those we serve. During my time as an assistant professor at St. John’s, I have always tried to motivate and inspire students on and off the field. It is my deepest desire to help athletes become the best versions of themselves.”
