Suncor faces charges related to injury of offshore Newfoundland worker: regulator

The Newfoundland and Labrador offshore oil and gas regulator has filed charges against Suncor Energy Inc. for alleged crimes related to the injury of a worker on the company’s offshore platform Terra Nova.
The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board says the charges are related to the December 29, 2019 injury to a worker who fell from a ladder while conducting gas tests.
The board alleges Suncor failed to ensure all workers had properly fastened seat belts, failed to ensure all employees were following protective equipment codes, and failed to produce a compliant report.

It says the first appearance on the matter is scheduled for January 25, 2023 at the Provincial Court in St. John’s.
Suncor is already coming under increased scrutiny for its safety record after at least 12 workers have died at its oil sands operations in northern Alberta since 2014.
Former CEO Mark Little vowed earlier this year to address the issue, including an independent safety review, but resigned from the company a day after the death of another Suncor contract worker in July.
