2 arrested for grandparent scams in Kawartha Lakes, Peterborough and Northumberland counties: OPP – Peterborough

Two people have been arrested in connection with a series of so-called grandparent scams targeting residents in central Ontario, including Peterborough and Northumberland counties and the town of Kawartha Lakes.

According to the Peterborough County OPP, on Jan. 24, police received a report that a Peterborough County resident had been cheated out of $8,000 by the cash-paying jail scam. Often the call directs the victim to meet at their home to make the payment.

According to the OPP, on Jan. 26, suspects attempted to scam the same victim out of an additional $9,500.

Later that day, the Peterborough/Northumberland Township Street Crime Unit and Peterborough Emergency Response Team visited the victim’s home and arrested one person at the scene.

David Zyla, 21, of Mississauga, has been charged with fraud totaling over $5,000.

He has been released and will appear in court in Peterborough on April 25.

According to the OPP, police have issued a search warrant in Mississauga as part of another ongoing investigation into grandparent fraud.

The search led to the arrest on Wednesday of Jenna Mohammed, 20, of Mississauga, who was charged with fraud of over $5,000.

She has been released and will appear in court in Peterborough on March 8.
