obituary
Judith (Judy) Anne Sokalski (McFaddin)
It is with deep sadness and immeasurable love that we announce the death of Judith Anne Sokalski (McFaddin), wife, mother, grandmother (Nana) and friend, on Thursday December 22nd at Woodstock Hospital, surrounded by her family at her bedside.
Judy was the pillar of our family and lived a life of helping and encouraging others in hopes of making the world a better place. We hope to be able to pass this blessing on to them.
Judy was predeceased by her father and mother Cecil (1969) and Elfrieda (1998) McFaddin, her beloved sister Patricia (1989) and nephew Michael Sentes (2003).
Judy leaves behind her devoted and devoted husband, Jerry, who has been by her side for 56 years; her daughters, who were her greatest achievements; Janet Morris (Rob) and Linda Levely (Andrew); her most treasured grandchildren, Darren and Kevin Holden, Teighan Morris, Hayden and Breanne Levely, and her ubiquitous fur baby, Jenny, who brought great joy to her on her down days.
Also greatly missed by sister-in-law Helen Sentes & niece Tara, Alice Gordon (John) & nephew Patrick Matt, Lillian Badke (Merv) and cousin Gillian McLeary. She will be fondly remembered by her many friends with her wonderful smile, which she all cherished so much.
Judy grew up in the community of New Toronto, Etobicoke, on the shores of Lake Ontario. The family was heavily involved in sports in the 40’s and 50’s. These included the Argo Rowing Club and the Toronto Argonauts football team, whose father was President, Commissioner and then President of the CFL. The prestigious Gray Cup often bounced around in the trunk of the family car. Judy followed the Argonauts to the present. To top it off, she had to look her best in the public school where her father was the principal.
Judy was the strength of our family and a valued member of her community. Her passion has always been to help others and make the world a better place for everyone.
Her first job was as a bank teller for the Toronto Dominion in Toronto for three years while she went to university, during which time she met Jerry. Judy attended Trinity College, University of Toronto, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in French and Psychology.
After graduating in 1964, Judy joined Canada Manpower in Toronto as a employment counselor/coordinator, dealing with finding employment opportunities for adults, sending them on vocational training or continuing education courses. She met Jerry on a blind date at a wedding and married two years later in May 1966. To escape the hustle and bustle of a big city, they moved to Woodstock in 1968 where she joined Woodstock Canada Manpower and worked for two more years before starting a family .
For relaxation, she enjoyed reading and cross-stitching, which she did extremely well, making incredible Christmas stockings and wall hangings for many.
A devoted Anglican, she attended the Church of the Good Shepherd with her family, where she held numerous positions while serving on the Board. As a Regal representative, she has funded a church fundraiser for several years. After Good Shepherd closed, she attended Christ Church Huntingford as best she could.
Judy volunteered at Birthright in the early 1970’s and then served as a member and Chair of the YWCA Program Committee. She also served on the board and acted as interim treasurer.
In the early years of raising the family, she spent long hours watching and driving to various music concerts, camp activities, and swimming lessons, along with team scoring at baseball games. Judy would never say no to a challenge or special assignment that involved her family. This all continued with the grandchildren as she proudly cheered in the stands at track and field meetings, karate demonstrations, ringette and soccer games. She rarely missed a school event or special occasion and was always the proudest spectator.
Wanting to serve young girls, she accepted the job of director of Big Sisters of Woodstock – (the pleasure of her life) where she would find and connect young women (Big Sisters) to mentor young girls (Little Sisters). to offer her advice and support while working from home in the early years. Judy once again made it her mission to improve the lives of others. She was most proud of her annual “Tim Hortons” camp project for “Little Sisters,” where she regularly received, received, and advocated for many more camp spots than were originally offered. This came from a longstanding and close relationship with Tim Horton’s warehouse management. Other achievements have included fundraisers such as the “Million Dollar Hole in One” and numerous public shows that have been brought in.
As a result, she received the Woodstock “Community Champion” award for her work as director of Big Sisters. She was also awarded the Canadian Government Certificate of Merit for community service. She retired from Big Sister after 22 years. From her early years with Canada ManPower to a long and successful career with Big Sisters, Judy has made it her mission to improve the lives of others. She always succeeded.
Many happy family summer vacations (including one with the family cat Scamper) have been spent at Al and Dianne’s Pickerel Lake Lodge in Burks Falls with swimming, campfires, frog races and volleyball. Mixed in were several trips east with her mother to the Maritimes, Newfoundland and west to Vancouver BC. Overseas trips to Hawaii and Italy as well as numerous cruises with and without families were undertaken. To the excitement, she and Jerry went on several wonderful RTO trips with the Puddicombe Groupies.
Once again not content with being at home, she put her ever friendly, warm smile and personable nature to work in the hallway of the old Woodstock Hospital as an Information Volunteer. She recently retired with Jerry from the new hospital after 19 years of service. During this time, she also volunteered with Jerry on Meals on Wheels for VON.
From her early years at Canada Manpower to a long and successful career at Big Sisters followed by volunteer jobs, Judy continued to make a difference in improving lives for families and others. She succeeded again and again, joining the Woodstock Ladies Probus Group and holding several positions – including President in 2007.
Yes, she was an amazing, amazing and fun loving wife, mother, nana and extremely good friend to many. The past few years have brought some medical problems that slowed her down.
Over the years, a close friendship developed with a “Group of TEN” friends and the Southside Lunch Group. In the final years of Covid, these friends helped keep Judy’s spirits up through visits, baking, flowers and phone calls. Ted and Joan kept our group together with Zoom calls. In addition, Sue’s cards and daily calls, along with many visits from Carol and Sister Scott, made this time bearable.
Even as her once excellent memory waned, Judy maintained her dignity and enjoyed hearing stories about family members or visitors who stopped by to chat. She was always concerned that everyone was “fine” and offered to help with any task that allowed her to be involved. Her love and affection for family and friends was evident to the end. Your love and memories will stay with us forever!
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Woodstock, Alzheimer’s, or Woodstock Hospital.
