Florida State’s projected 2023 scholarship count: post-Early Signing Period

The Seminoles were able to assemble a solid class during the early signing period that fills the needs and provides an infusion of young talent for the 2023 roster. The state of Florida brings in a mix of high school, junior college, and transfer portal signers. Despite the loss of four-star defensive end Keldric Faulk to Auburn, the program holds the No. 16 recruiting class in the country, according to the SI All-American.

There are not many high school recruits left on the board, but the state of Florida will continue to test the portal. The Seminoles are among the top picks for former Western Michigan defensive tackle Braden Fiske and former Virginia cornerback Fentrell ‘Deuce’ Cypress II. Options will likely expand in January and after spring as the team looks at attrition.
Technically, FSU can add as many new players to the roster as needed as long as the team reaches the 85 scholarship limit before the start of the next season. The NCAA introduced a temporary rule allowing teams to exceed the previous limit of 32 new players.
Let’s take a look at where the scholarship count is ahead of the upcoming new year.

Currently, Florida State is slightly over the line with 86 scholarships expected to be awarded for the 2023 season. It is important to note that we removed Jammie Robinson from the list as he has been vocal about his intentions to turn pro but has not made any official announcement. At this point, we’re keeping Jared Verse on defensive end and Fabien Lovett on defensive tackle and counting them into the limit.
The number could change slightly if these two go pro. Also, there is uncertainty as to whether Redshirt junior tight end Preston Daniel, Redshirt sophomore running back CJ Campbell, or Redshirt freshman tight end Dante Anderson will receive a stipend. The program hasn’t brought any official clarification one way or another.
There’s a chance Redshirt senior offensive lineman Kayden Lyles could get a waiver from playing next year. However, he could very well choose to focus on a post as a research assistant.
Redshirt junior running back Caziah Holmes was not believed to have had a scholarship in the fall. We assume he will be promoted to a member of the 85-man limit. It would be easier if Redshirt junior Treshaun Ward entered the transfer portal.
The attrition is not over yet. NoleGameday expects a few more players currently on the list to drop out of the program in the coming weeks and months. It’s going to be a fascinating situation to watch, but it’s also something the coaching staff have been preparing for.
