What’s open and closed in Montreal for Christmas and into the New Year – Montreal

As you finalize your plans for the holiday season, remember that not everything is open-ended.

Winter storm closures notwithstanding, here are the shops and services you can count on to be open — and those that will remain closed as we head into 2023.

Public transport

In Montreal, STM buses operate on a holiday schedule on December 25 and Boxing Day on December 26. In the New Year, the buses will run on January 1st and 2nd according to the public holiday timetable. Plan your trip in advance.

In Laval, the STL offers a free bus service on December 24th and 31st. Instead of paying a fare, public transport users can make a donation. The money raised will go to the Center de bénévolat and the Moisson Laval food bank.” The transport company operates on December 24th, December 26th, December 31st and January 2nd according to a Saturday timetable. On Christmas Day and New Year’s Day the buses run on a reduced Sunday timetable.

RTL buses operate in Longueuil on 24/12, 26/12, 31/12 and 31/12. and 02.01. Saturdays and December 25th and 01.01 may be some exceptions on certain bus routes.

Only two train lines, exo1 and exo2, will operate during public holidays.

Exo 2 runs trains on December 24, December 25, December 26, December 31, January 1 and January 2 on a weekend schedule.

Exo 1 will operate on a Saturday schedule on December 24th and 31st and a Sunday schedule on December 25th, December 26th, January 1st and January 2nd

Attractions

Arenas, swimming pools, sports centers and libraries operate according to the schedule of their respective districts. Call before.

The sites of the Espace pour La Vie, including the Biodome, the Biosphere, the Insectarium, the Botanical Garden and the Planetarium, are open throughout the festive season except December 24th and 25th. On January 1st, the various venues will open later than usual at 13:00. The full schedule can be viewed online.

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal and the McCord Stewart Museum are closed on December 25th, December 26th, January 1st and 2nd. The Montreal Science Center is closed on the following days: January 23, 24, 25, 31 and 1, 10 and 11. Tickets for the Science Center must be purchased online between December 26th and January 8th due to limited space.

Shopping

Most SAQ stores close at 5pm on December 24th and reopen at 1pm on December 26th. On New Year’s Eve the shops close at 17:00 and reopen on 2 January 2023 at 13:00.

Most malls including Rockland Centre, Fairview Pointe-Claire, Eaton Center and Place Montreal Trust remain closed on December 25th and New Year’s Day. Shops open on Boxing Day, December 26, from 1pm.

City Offices

Most City of Montreal offices will be closed for the holiday December 23 through January 3, including District and Accès Montreal offices and various service points. They are scheduled to reopen on January 4th.

All of the city’s digital offerings remain accessible during the holiday season. Requests submitted during the holiday period will be accepted but will not be processed until January 4, 2023.

Montreal Courthouse

Between December 23, 2022 and January 4, 2023 inclusive, only the files of the detainees will be processed in court.

The customer service desks operate at different times with the main service office on Gosford Street being closed from 23rd December to 3rd January.

garbage collection

Garbage collection, recycling, and composting schedules remain unchanged for the holidays. The only exception is the district of Lachine, which will only resume the collection of bulky goods on January 5th.

Eco centers are closed for the holidays from December 24th to January 2nd inclusive.

Roadside Christmas tree pickup

In January, natural Christmas trees are collected in all 19 districts and processed into wood chips.
